Bullet Train on Netflix

Easily one of the best action films I've seen in a long time. It seems to fit into the long tradition of simple, straightforward 90s action movies I remember - simple premise, small setting, great action, and a plot that unfolds to be deeper and deeper at every turn. It felt like a little Kill Bill, a little John Wick, a little Deadpool, and a little Speed all put together nicely. A

Minions: The Rise of Gru on Netflix

What can I say? It's a Minions movie about the backstory of Gru, and it's exactly what you'd expect. I did note while watching it that the movie is set in (and makes many references to) the 1970s, and at this point not only will the kids be too young to get those jokes but probably many of their parents are too young as well. I guess it works since many grandparents seem to love the Minions (if my Facebook is any indication)? A solid B

Aggretsuko on Netflix

5 seasons of one of the best and most surprising workplace and relationship comedy shows in recent memory. Don't let the cute characters and bright colors fool you - this is a show that isn't afraid to tackle deep, and deeply relatable, subjects, while showing the importance of communication, trust, and friendship. A

RRR on Netflix

A Tollywood epic that really lives up to the hype. This is a very long movie (clocking in at just over 3 hours) and it uses that time to allow the story, as well as the songs, to develop slowly and linger a bit longer. As I commented while watching it - this movie seems to go over the top quite a bit, and I'm totally here for it! A

I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

A depressing look at a young actress's struggles with an abusive mother and the long process of coming to terms with the lasting impact that had on her adult life. Definitely a depressing read, but written in a unique voice that helped make it feel like this was therapy for the author as much as it was meant to tell us the story. B

Wednesday on Netflix

A great spin on a classic character. I ended up liking it much more than I thought I would, though in hindsight some of the character's motivations are suspect. I ended up rewatching the 90s movies afterward and they held up surprisingly well. B

Game Changer on Dropout

A game show where the contestants don't know what game they are playing (usually) and must figure it out as they go. A great concept that is executed perfectly, leading to both hilarity and truly artistic displays of talent. A

Pressure Cooker on Netflix

A cooking reality show with a pretty simple concept, but it was very interesting to see the interpersonal dynamics play out. It also definitely gave you some characters you love to hate, but I ended up binging it in one sitting. C

The Circle on Netflix.

I'll admit that it is pretty low-brow reality TV, but I do love how even the catfishing contestants always show their inner selves, and usually the winner is genuinely a nice and deserving person. A
